Joanna is a true renaissance woman with notable academic and running achievements.
I earned my Bachelor of Arts degrees in Biology and French from Oberlin College. I earned my Master of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Studies from Smith College.
I started running cross country in high school. In my first season, I could see how the work I put in led to continuous improvement over time. I have continued to train and compete ever since. I love the versatility of running – regardless of where I am or what the weather may be, with fellow runners or own my own, I can lace up my shoes and head out the door.
Talking about my notable achievements, I earned 7 All American honors in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track while running for Oberlin College. Following graduation, I was awarded a Watson Fellowship to spend 12 months traveling around the world, training with elite teams and community running clubs, to study women’s empowerment through running. I now primarily compete in marathons. My marathon PR is 2:48 (Cleveland Marathon, 2013). Most recently, I finished as the 5th female in the Columbus Marathon.
I am passionate about coaching runners of all levels and experiences. I am an Assistant Coach for Cross Country and Track and Field at Bowling Green State University, and I also manage my personal coaching business, Runacious, for runners in the community.
As an athlete and coach for collegiate and community athletes, it is my goal to inspire others to pursue their passions, strive for challenging goals, and to have a positive attitude, by modeling these three things myself. My running goals for the next year are to run a 16:40 5k and a sub-35:00 10k, and my long-term goal is to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials. My other interests are cooking, writing and yoga.
“When I take tea to work, or pack it for after a morning workout, my tea is still just as hot several hours later as when I packed it! I’ve never had a go-cup that held temperature so well! It works great for cold drinks as well. It’s also very easy to clean!”
